Title Become a Top Wedding Planner - Your Duties As a Wedding Planner
Category Starting a Wedding Planning Business
Article Are you considering becoming a wedding planner but aren't quite sure what a wedding planner does and what services you would offer?

A wedding planner's job is to take care of every detail related to a wedding.

When you become a planner, the exact services you would offer depend on your skills and the niche you select but this is what most wedding planners do:

Consultations

  • Meet with a couple, learn their wedding vision and create a plan to make it a reality
  • Create and oversee the wedding budget so the couple doesn't spend money they don't have
  • Assist in selecting the wedding date, taking in consideration holidays and special events that the couple may not have thought of themselves
  • Create and manage the wedding timeline so everything gets done
  • Suggest a wedding theme or style so there is a common thread for all of the details
  • Give advice on wedding attire to assure that the styles blend well with the theme and style of the wedding

  • Services

  • Help select invitations, flowers, the cake, linens, the menu, any style elements for the ceremony and reception so everything follows the theme of the event
  • Provide information on wedding etiquette, customs and traditions that the couple wants to follow
  • Research venues and help select a site that will match the budget, size and theme of the wedding
  • Research, recommend, and assist in selecting vendors that can carry out the couple's wedding vision at their budget level
  • Negotiate contracts to help the couple get the best deals while still getting the wedding they want
  • Be the single-point-of-contact for vendors so the couple won't be stressed trying to keep track of everyone themselves

  • Rehearsal and Wedding Day Duties

  • Design or work with the design team to design the ceremony and reception sites
  • Run the rehearsal and give the wedding party directions so everyone knows their responsibilities on the wedding day
  • Assist the wedding party in dressing and preparing for the ceremony so they have someone they can rely on to direct them when they need help
  • Oversee the setup of the ceremony and reception sites, coordinating vendors and staff so all runs smoothly
  • Manage the wedding ceremony and reception so it runs on schedule
  • Oversee the exit of the bride and groom and the post-wedding cleanup so friends and family can relax after the wedding

  • Possible Additional Duties

  • Plan wedding-related parties such as engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, bridesmaids' luncheons, rehearsal dinners, after-parties, and post-wedding brunches so the couple's families and friends don't have to do it
  • Manage the addressing and mailing of invitations and receive RSVPs so the couple and their families aren't bothered and stressed sorting through emails and response cards to see who accepted
  • Arrange flights, hotel reservations, and activities for out-of-town family members and guests so no one has to worry about their travel arrangements
  • Assemble gift bags for out-of-town guests and help select and organize favors
  • And much more...

  • In other words, as a wedding planner you would help a couple realize their dream wedding without the stress of doing it themselves.
